The concept of the Anthropocene has come to be associated with anthropocentrism, or human-centrism in both practical and philosophical sense. The context of the concepts of deep and shallow ecology, animal welfare and animal rights will be used to address Environmental Education (EE) and Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). This chapter will address the most pertinent and significant aspects of EE and ESD that challenge the anthropocentric bias in the Anthropocene. Environmental ethics and the issue of pluralism will be discussed to assess different types of educational strategies that are able to reposition students as responsible planetary citizens in the context of the expanding Anthropocene.
